Hybrid Core Course Credential

Hybrid LearningThere is a new option for earning the Core Credential that saves travel time and money!  Appalachian State's Adult Basic Skills Professional Development, in partnership with North Carolina Community College System's College and Career Readiness, began offering the Hybrid Core Credential in January 2017.  Instead of traveling to seven face-to-face workshops, participants can now earn the core credential by attending two face-to-face workshops and completing the rest of the work online.

How Does It Work?

Participants begin with a 6 hour face to face workshop that teaches content and describes how to use App State‚Äôs online learning management system. They will then complete a 30 to 40 hour online course offered over 10 weeks. The online course will be facilitated by instructors from App State, so participants will get plenty of help and feedback. The Hybrid Core ends with a 6 hour face-to-face workshop.

The Hybrid Core covers all seven core courses: Applying Content Standards: GPS for Success, Assessment to Instruction, Evidence Based Reading, Math, and Writing, Contextualized Instruction, and Teaching Strategies Integrating Technology.  Participants will be in a cohort group with their peers.  To see a sample course outline from a recent cohort, click HERE

What Participants Are Saying

"I am making use of available resources like the ABSPD Lending Library.  I have integrated technology into my classes including Facebook and Google Slides.  I also use a much more contextualized approach to teach my students and plan lessons based on the content standards.  This has increased my classroom attendance."

"I was weak with my technology skills prior to this course.  By the end of the course, I created a video that shows what I learned over the past two months.  I've been teaching math for years, but I now know about how to get my students involved in learning with a student-centered approach."

"I learned that if it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you . . . I also learned how to increase communication inside my math classroom."

"When I attended face-to-face workshops, I had good intentions.  I would then return to campus and get sucked back into reality and not implement what I learned.  This format encouraged me to practice what I learned in my classroom."

Hybrid Core Keys to Success

1.  Be able to attend the two full day (8:30 AM to 4 PM) face-to-face workshops.

2.  Commit to completing at least 30 hours of online instruction between the two face to face workshops.  This means you must be able to fit 3 to 4 hours each week of online learning time into your already busy schedule!  How are your time management skills?

3.  Realize that online learning demands more time and effort than face-to-face learning.

4.  Have strong reading, research and writing skills.

5.  Have regular access to a reliable computer with a strong Internet connection.

6.  Have strong computer skills and be willing to learn how to use a learning management system and Google tools (drive, docs, slides).

7.  Be a self-starter who does not need reminders to complete ongoing assignments.

8.  Be the type of person who finishes what they start!
