Institute 2020 – Essential Components of Reading

Week 2: May 26-29, 2020 begins at 9:30 am on May 26 and ends at 1:30 on May 22

Location: Appalachian State University, Reich College of Education, Room 124

This institute may be taken as a workshop ($395 early registration, $445 regular registration) or
as a 3-hour graduate credit course ($697.53). Fees include 4 lunches and institute materials.

CI5531 Essential Components of Reading
Strong reading skills helps adult learners make measurable skills gain and plays a role in their
ability to attain a secondary school diploma, transition to postsecondary education and
training, and secure employment. WIOA specifies that “the essential components of reading
instruction” be incorporated into instruction of adult learners. Participants will learn explicit
and systematic instruction techniques for teaching phonemic awareness; phonics; vocabulary
development; reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Participants enrolled in this course
will be required to develop a plan to address issues affecting their own classroom and/or
program based on the knowledge and skills they acquire during this course.
