Face to Face Professional Development



Each year in late May and early June, ABSPD conducts two Institutes for adult basic skills professionals on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  Institute shifts focus every year based on topics of critical importance to adult educators.Institute is offered both as a workshop as well as a three hour graduate course.

ABSPD is proud to partner with the North Carolina Community College System's College and Career Readiness professional development efforts. Professional development courses for adult educators seeking to earn a Core, ASE, or ESOL Credential as well as those interested in STAR training are linked below. 

Trainings begin at 8:30am and end at 4:00pm.

Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) provides instructors with the research-based knowledge and skills to assess and teach intermediate readers (levels 4 to 8.9) in alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Participants in this 6 day workshop also learn how to monitor instruction and create classroom routines.  More information about STAR can be found here.
